Maria Staal was born and grew up in the Netherlands and moved to York three years ago. She was immediately fascinated by the history of her new hometown. About her first published book she said, “When I began my research for this book I initially thought that two thousand years of history would have changed the city of York a lot, but when I looked closely I realised that it hasn’t really changed at all. With a little bit of help it is still possible to see the Roman streets, imagine yourself in Medieval times, roam through a Viking settlement and almost smell the gunpowder from the great siege.”
“Although originally from the Netherlands I now most certainly think of myself as a resident of York. When I first arrived I found that when you to look at the city with different eyes can discover many fascinating areas of the city. It doesn’t matter if you have lived in York all your life or if you’re visiting, even for just a few days, exploring this city is great fun and very enlightening”.
“I wrote Romans, Vikings, Churches and Chocolate to show help the reader discover for themselves the history of this fascinating city in a fun and clear way. I have used a lot of pictures of the modern streets and buildings, maps reveal how the street patterns were built up over the centuries and in an easy way it guides you through 2000 years of settlement, wars, entertainment and industrial revolution. This is not a book with guided walks, but a book with which you can choose how to discover your favourite historic periods in your own time”.
