The Grand Tour York, summer 2008

For 12 weeks during summer 2007 the streets of London were adorned with some of the most famous images form the National Gallery’s collection, turning the West End into a huge open-air gallery. The paintings, by old masters including Caravaggio, Michelangelo and Constable were reproduced to such a high quality that the prints could easily be mistaken for the real thing. The prints, produced by EPS of Leeds with printers by Hewlett Packard, replicate not only the scale of these paintings but also the brush strokes and texture of the originals.
For summer 2008, the Grand Tour has ventured north to York to give residents and visitors a unique opportunity to see these fabulous paintings in the surroundings of our beautiful historic city.
The reproduction pictures first started appearing on Thursday 5th June and new ones will keep appearing around the city every Tuesday and Thursday until 19th June.
The pictures will be full sized and all will be framed. Beside each print will be a museum label giving information about the painting and artist. Walking Trails will be available to pick up after Thursday 19th June. Available from York Art Gallery or to download from   www.thegrandtourinyork.org.uk they will take you on a tour around the city to see some of the world’s best known paintings, while taking in sights including some of York’s most important architecture.

Three of York’s city centre churches will be locations for these paintings and their precise location will be revealed in the next two weeks.
In the mean time, have a look at the paintings already installed and keep looking out for the city centre churches involved in this fantastic project for summer 2008.
